On Saturday in Lucknow, a new variety of lotus flower dubbed “Namoh 108” was introduced by Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh. It was created by the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), a plant-based research facility located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and is a special lotus with 108 petals.

The Union minister also unveiled ‘Frotus,’ a perfume produced from lotus blossoms, and garments manufactured from lotus fiber at the ceremony. According to a ministry press statement, the apparel and scent were created by NBRI in conjunction with FFDC, Kannauj, as part of the Lotus Research Program.

Jitendra Singh commended NBRI for designating this special kind of lotus as “Namoh 108.” In the tenth year of his term as prime minister, he observed, “It is a grand gift to the unwavering zeal and inherent beauty of Narendra Modi.”

‘Lotus Mission’

Jitendra Singh also unveiled the “Lotus Mission” at the event on Saturday, saying it would be carried out in the same way as earlier missions like the National Honey and Bee Mission (NHBM), National Bamboo Mission (NBM), National Food Security Mission (NFSM), National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF), National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), Gokul Mission, Blue Revolution, and Mission Shakti.

“Following the incredible success of the Aroma Mission, the Government has now launched the Lotus Mission under the leadership of PM Modi. “This Government not only launches a scheme or project, but also ensures that it is capped,” remarked Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

What’s special about this new variety?

In contrast to other forms of , this particular variety can endure various weather conditions better. The longest-lasting lotus variety, it can bloom at any time between March and December. This lotus blooms for a longer amount of time than others, which only last for four to five months on average. Additionally, it is the first lotus species whose entire genetic make-up has been deciphered in order to comprehend its features.
