On social media, a horrifying video of Manipur violence, two women in Manipur being paraded naked on a road by a gang of men has gone viral, sparking outrage and calls for action. A tribal group claims that the two women were subjected to multiple gang rapes in a field.
According to a statement by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), the incident took place on May 4 in the Kangpokpi area, around 35 kilometers from the state capital Imphal. The event, according to the police, took place in a different district, despite the fact that the first information report (FIR) was submitted in Kangpokpi.

Police are gonna give this case priority attention, according to Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Smriti Irani, the minister for women’s and children’s development, reportedly spoke with Chief Secretary and Mr. Singh about the terrible incident. She has been promised prompt action against the crime’s perpetrators, according to Mr. Singh.

In a separate tweet, Ms. Irani stated that she had spoken with Mr. Singh, who assured her that “no effort will be spared to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

The Meitei tribe, which is primarily from the valley, and the Kuki tribe, which is primarily from the hills, got into a fight in Manipur the day before this horrifying on-camera incident. The dispute was over the Meiteis’ quest for Scheduled Tribes (ST) classification.

The ITLF added in the statement, “…The despicable scene, which happened on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, shows the men constantly molesting the helpless women, who cry and plead with their captors.”

The ITLF urged the National Commission for Women and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to intervene, claiming that the perpetrators’ choice to post the video, which reveals the victims’ identities, on social media had only served to magnify the horrifying ordeal endured by these innocent women.

A case of gang rape and murder has been reported, according to a tweet from the Manipur Police today.

According to a senior police official today, “We have identified the men and will make an arrest shortly.” The officer stated that the survivors came to the police about 15 days after their horrifying experience on May 4. Even though the crime did not occur there, they traveled to Kangpokpi. But we do have leads. Within a day or two, the men will be apprehended, the officer continued.

Political figures and others have expressed astonishment over the Manipur event on social media and urged the federal and state governments to take action against the perpetrators.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a senior in the Congress, tweeted in Hindi that the Manipur-related images of sexual assault against women are heartbreaking. “The level of denunciation for this horrifying act of assault against women is lower. “Violence in society must disproportionately affect women and children,” she said.
