Manipur Sexual Assault Case Updates:
According to authorities, the fifth suspect in relation to the video that leaked on July 19 and showed two women being paraded naked by a mob in conflict-torn Manipur has been detained. The accused, who is 19 years old, has been named.
The accused males were remanded in 11-day police detention on July 21 as the chorus of demonstrations against the sexual assault of two women in Manipur got louder, and the house of another suspect was set on fire by enraged neighbors in a second event related to the case.
An FIR filed in the sexual assault case on June 21 described how an armed mob of nearly a thousand people attacked a village in the Kangpokpi district and allegedly set houses on fire, looted them, killed and raped people without cause before kidnapping the two tribal women. This occurred as the Manipur police launched a massive manhunt to find all the perpetrators.
A violent mob drags the two ladies toward a paddy field on May 4, a day after unrest began in the northeastern State, in a 26-second video that surfaced on Wednesday and quickly gained widespread attention.
