In Rajasthan’s Kota on Thursday, a student, age 18, who was preparing for medical entrance examinations, committed herself. Manjot Singh, the victim, came to Kota in April of this year and was from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh.
He joined a coaching program to get ready for the NEET. On Thursday morning, his body was discovered hanging from a fan in his dorm room. Kota has received reports of at least 19 student fatalities this year.
In Kota last month, the body of a 17-year-old student taking the IIT entrance exam was discovered. After learning about the event, the police discovered the child in his hostel room hanging from a fan.
The episode, which is the most recent of several suicide instances, has once again drawn attention to Kota’s troubling record of student suicides.
Kota in Rajasthan is well known for its coaching facilities but has recently gained notoriety for student suicides. It is projected that more than 2.25 lakh students have enrolled in classes at various coaching facilities throughout the city this academic year in order to pass the entrance exams for engineering and medical schools.
Five students in Kota committed suicide in the month of May alone, from May 9 and May 27. Parents of the students complained to India Today that pupils are not receiving the required counseling to deal with the stress brought on by the highly competitive environment, where every student is expected to succeed despite their struggles.
