Update: ‘Red alert’ in several areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand due to weather

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has updated red alerts in six districts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand due to heavy rainfall and lightening for the next 24 hours. IMD states, “Very heavy to extremely heavy rain/ thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and very intense to extremely intense spell is very likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Pauri, Tehri, Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar in next 24 hours.”

The local Met station of Himachal Pradesh has issued a ‘yellow alert’ at isolated places from 14 August to 17 August. Schools and colleges have closed and post exams have been cancelled by the state government today.

In the last 24 hours, 50 people were dead

In Himachal Pradesh, over 50 people died in the rain incident from the last 24 hours, CM Sakku said on Monday.

He wrote, “Over 50 people have lost their lives in the state in last 24 hours. Over 20 people are still trapped, the death toll can also increase. The search and rescue operation is underway. We have taken the decision not to organise any cultural program on the occasion of Independence Day.”

Himachal Pradesh CM, disaster management authority of uttarakhand has reported on this rain related incident

Government of Himachal Pradesh said, “Kalka-Shimla railway track at km 92/6-92/7 between Jutogh & Summer Hill railway stations is washed away due to heavy rains. The movement of trains between Kandaghat-Shimla is cancelled.”

Order issued on Monday by Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority, “Char Dham Yatra stopped temporarily on the 14th and 15th August following disruption in the movement of traffic due to landslides after heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand.”

Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukku said, “There are confirmed four bodies and a possibility of two to three people buried inside the debris in the Summer Hill. Total 8 bodies have been taken out from the nearby areas of Shimla. I assume that we can’t say about the death count considering the number of people buried. We are trying to save their lives.”
