“Delhi NCR Pollution: Diwali Blamed, Stubble Burning Ignored”

"Delhi NCR Pollution: Diwali Blamed, Stubble Burning Ignored"

As the pollution levels in Delhi NCR reach alarming levels, ranging from ‘very poor’ to ‘hazardous’, the usual blame game targeting Diwali is already underway. However, the reality behind the deteriorating air quality lies in a much larger and persistent issue – stubble burning in the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana.

While Diwali is often portrayed as the sole reason for the spike in pollution during this time of the year, the actual root cause goes unnoticed and unchecked. Stubble burning, a widespread agricultural practice, releases vast amounts of harmful pollutants into the air, contributing significantly to the deteriorating air quality in the region.

The tradition of stubble burning involves setting fire to crop residue after harvesting to clear the fields quickly for the next planting season. However, the burning of agricultural waste releases large quantities of particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and other harmful gases into the atmosphere, exacerbating the already critical pollution levels.

While the blame on Diwali festivities has become a trend, the real problem of stubble burning persists year after year. This convenient scapegoating leads to a decline in the celebration of festivals and enjoyment of cultural activities.

Diwali Blame Overshadows Ongoing Stubble Burning Issue

Interestingly, a study conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, earlier this year, found that biomass-burning emissions, including those from stubble burning, play a more significant role in deteriorating air quality during the days following Diwali, rather than firecrackers.

Despite the evidence, little action is being taken to address the core issue of stubble burning. Both the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab and the BJP in Haryana seem to overlook the rampant practice, failing to implement effective measures to curb it.

The selective banning of festivities while turning a blind eye to other events, such as elections, sports events, and weddings, showcases the hypocrisy and lack of a holistic approach in tackling pollution.

It is disheartening to see the younger generation easily falling prey to unfounded allegations without critically questioning or seeking the truth. The youth should be empowered to challenge misinformation and make informed decisions.

Comparing similar situations in other countries can shed light on the disproportionate measures taken during festive occasions in India. It is essential to find practical solutions and address the real culprits of pollution, such as stubble burning, to safeguard the environment and preserve our traditions.

Addressing the issue of stubble burning requires a concerted effort and collaboration among all stakeholders, including farmers, government authorities, and environmental agencies. Only through collective action can we make a meaningful impact on improving air quality and ensuring a sustainable future.
